General Information :
The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is India’s mandatory, single national exam for admission to undergraduate medical courses (MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, etc.), conducted annually by the NTA (National Testing Agency) for students who have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It’s a highly competitive, pen-and-paper OMR test with sections in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, featuring 4 marks for correct answers and -1 for incorrect ones, serving as the gateway to medical colleges nationwide.
Key Aspects of NEET:
- Purpose: Admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS, and BSc Nursing courses.
- Conducted By: National Testing Agency (NTA).
- Frequency: Once a year, typically in May.
- Format: Offline (Pen & Paper/OMR).
- Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany & Zoology).
- Marking Scheme: +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect.
- Languages: Available in 13 languages (English, Hindi, etc.).
Who Can Take It?
- Candidates who have passed 10+2 (or equivalent) with PCB and English.
- Minimum marks vary by category (e.g., 50% for General).
- There’s no upper age limit, and candidates appearing for their 12th exams are eligible.
Why It’s Important:
- It’s the only gateway for most medical UG admissions in India.
- It replaced previous exams like AIPMT.

There are a total of 542 medical colleges, 313 dental colleges, 914 AYUSH colleges, and 47 BVSc & AH colleges in India that will acknowledge NEET results. There are a total of 15 AIIMS campuses and 2 JIPMER campuses that also accept this exam score for admission. This year, admission to the B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing programe will also happen through the NEET exam; however, the seat matrix has not yet been made public.
